Julia Ernst, soprano, is currently pursuing her Master of Music at Yale University- School of Music in the studio of the esteemed Gerald Martin Moore. She graduated with honors from Loyola University of New Orleans where she studied under internationally renowned soprano, Irini Kyriakidou-Hymel.
Spring of 2026, Julia is honored to sing Mimi in Yale Opera’s mainstage production of Puccini’s La Bohème. Additionally, she is thrilled to sing The Governess in Yale Opera’s production of Britten’s Turn of the Screw.
Fall of 2025 at Yale School of Music, Julia will sing Govinda in Siddhartha, She composed by Christopher Theofanidis. She will also perform scenes from La Bohème (Mimi) and Susannah (Susannah).
Summer of 2025, Julia covered the role of Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème at Aspen Music Festival.
Spring of 2025, Julia sang the title role of Iolanta in Yale Opera’s mainstage production of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta. Fall of 2024, Julia performed in the Yale Opera Scenes Program as both Countess Almaviva from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and as Iolanta in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta.
Summer of 2024, while studying as a Lehrer Vocal Institute Fellow, Julia covered the role of Micaëla in Music Academy of the West’s fully staged production of Carmen. January of 2024, she sang the roles of Lia in L'enfant Prodigue and La Bergere in L'enfant et les Sortilèges with Loyola Opera.
In March of 2023, Ms. Ernst made her professional debut with New Orleans Opera singing the role of Kate Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly. Summer of 2023, she sang Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze Di Figaro with Saluzzo Opera Academy in Italy.
Previous opera and opera scene roles include: Don Giovanni (Donna Anna), Hansel and Gretel (Mother), Die Zauberflöte (Pamina), Die Fledermaus (Orlofsky), Suor Angelica (The Nursing Sister), Cosi Fan Tutte (Dorabella), and Dido and Aeneas (Second Woman).
Julia won First Place in the Loyola University of New Orleans Concerto Competition, Gulf Coast Steinway Vocal Competition, Neapolitan Masters International Vocal Competition, and NATS Southern Region.
She won Second Place in the Orpheus National Vocal Competition, FAVA Grand Concours French Opera and Art Song Competition, Music International Grand Prix, and The John Alexander Vocal Competition. She was a finalist for both Opera Grand Rapids VanderLaan Prize and the Schmidt Vocal Competition Undergraduate Awards.
In January of 2024, Julia won the New Orleans District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. She then competed in the Gulf Coast Region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition where she won the Audience Choice Award.
In October of 2024, Julia won the Connecticut District of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. She subsequently won Third Place in the New England Region on January 26th, 2025.
Julia was recently named a semifinalist in the 2025 Butler Opera International Competition and she is looking forward to competing in September 2025. She will also compete in the semifinals of The Gerda Lissner Foundation Art Song Competition in October 2025.
